Leisure World Minyan

Are you Jewish, living in Leisure World, and looking for a place to daven on Shabbos and Yom Tov? Well now you can have one! A group of families have worked hard to establish an orthodox minyan right in the heart of Leisure World. The minyan is open to all men and women looking for that special Jewish place to pray on Shabbos and Yom Tov. The minyan has the support of our Jewish residents in Leisure World and community Board of Jewish Education.

Now you can be retired, live in your own home and daven at the Leisure World Minyan. Leisure World in Montgomery Country is one of the finest retirement communities on the east coast, with a large Jewish population that continues to grow. We sincerely hope, G-d willing, that our current efforts will give us all another place to gather and worship together, in the traditional orthodox way.

Our current officers are: Morton A. Davis, President; Judith Lasson, Vice President; Jonas Weiss, Secretary; Kit Kirshenbaum, Treasurer.

The Minyan Continues to Grow

 

Since January 2006, the Minyan has been an official organization within Leisure World, with officers and bylaws. With the legal assistance of Elli Schorr living with his family in Israel, we have now become a non-profit organization. As an organization, we are also allowed use of a room in Club House II for our meetings. Club House II is undergoing renovation, so G-d willing, we should be able to start in November.

The Minyan, along with all organizations, participated and celebrated Leisure World's 40th anniversary on Thursday, September 21. We wish to thank Judith Lasson and Kit Kirshenbaum for staying all day to greet residents, pass out literature and gifts. We had a very nice turnout and a lot of interest in the Minyan. Thanks to everyone for stopping by and meeting our group!

Leisure World residents and families in the surrounding communities and even out of state have been very generous supporting our organization. We now have our own Sefer Torah, a donation of Rabbi Tuvia Grauman and family. Rabbi Raphael Malka of Silver Spring, who repaired the Torah, described it as a ..."very beautiful 80-100 year old Torah from White Russia...".  Other donations in memory of family members include Art Scroll Chumashim and Siddurim. We even have an Aron to house the Torah, and a Bemah for reading Torah, being built.

All residents, regardless of religious background, are invited to attend and participate. The Minyan is currently looking for residents wishing to be active or make charitable contributions. Please contact Kit Kirshenbaum, Vantage West, 301-598-0883.
